Mainly because I'm really bored of revision, but also because I'm just curious...
What is your radio station of choice? How do you prefer to listen to it?
Mine is Virgin Radio. I wake up to it on my normal radio, but during the day I usually listen over the net because of the crackly MW reception.
Randomness ends here. Back to the analytical biochem...

Sick of revision too, only one exam left though. Good luck with your's Emma. Newstalk 106, pretty much constantly, wake up to it, and catch it in the evenings after uni. It's talk only, no music. Musicwise? Too many pop stations so it's hard to find any decent music, except for a handful of DJs on some of the national stations, Today FM, 2FM, RTE 1. Even then I barely tune in. Anyway, globalisation, consumption...

Well what do you know, revision here too...good luck you two, I'm worried and I'm going to fail, it's a fact I also have assignments due....but erm anyway................. I usually hate listening to Radio...I'll listen to it when a CD player isn't around and there has to be music...usually it's Radio One because it's the easiest to find and has the best reception, I'd probably pick Virgin though if I could find it.....XFM can be okay but I can only get that through digital. My sister listens to The Storm a lot which we can only get on Digital too. The best is Fram FM ...I used to be a producer and co-presenter on it ;D

Gave up on Newstalk around 2 years ago, it became awful, nae, shite. I now have an internet radio which I love. I wake up to BBC radio 4, no need to have the computer on to listen to stuff. I like NPR as well, calm, mostly informative broadcasting, not hackery or shock jock crap. Some fun archive some on stations that 1920s stuff, 1950s radio drama or sci-fi, too. st1.webradioworld.net:8088/played.htmlwww.the1920snetwork.com/www.alltimeoldies.com/

Aww man I need one of those NPR is a great listen yeah ... usually the first to get some of the best music. My favourite station used to BBC 6 Music ... it's suddenly gotten a lot more popular however and isn't being as original as it was once. But it's being faced with the axe so I guess it needs to cater ... but still has some great stuff on it.

I've noticed that about NPR, though I don't really follow up on the artists it invites on or listen to its music stuff. It has a podcast where you can download live shows, however. ;D
I've heard R6 was good, sadly a lot of stations fall into the pattern you describe. What was original about it?

NPR did a nice little feature on Mark Linkous (Singer of Sparklehorse) after he died a few months ago - it was great that they paid so much respect. Well R6 wasn't really original, but for BBC stations it was playing great music. Guys like Adam and Joe and Danny Wallace had shows which were fun. Then you'd have specialist shows like Mark Riley which played a lot of old sessions and even got me in Nina Nastasia. They were usually old John Peel sessions. Guy Garvey, the singer from Elbow has his own show where he just plays whatever he wants. But it mostly played music you wouldn't expect on radio - a lot of album tracks from some great bands (like Eels!).

Hmm, that might be where I heard about his death. They do have features like 'tiny desk concerts', plenty on Youtube, etc.
John Peel, I only know the name, but it seems like he was a proper musichead, always good to hear decent old shows being broadcast again. So, R6 isn't necessarily specialist music as such? That was kinda my perception when I first heard about it.

Was gutted beyond belief when I heard of his passing ... perhaps only Mark Linkous's death was a bigger smack for me actually. R6 is and it isn't ... it's mainly rock, indie, band music. They do have jazz shows and some soul stuff on there too now and then (there's a show for it on Sunday afternoons) ... but it's basically anything except pop, rap, classical, dance ... if that makes sense?

I think we've one or two people here who would probably be from the same mould as Peel.
Good radio is hard to find. I might check out R6 at some stage. Is it definitely facing the axe?

Not sure if it's definite or not. But from what I've heard, it's likely ... which is a huge shame.
But I think BBC have discovered since the news broke, that it's more popular than they though.

Yeah, I've heard that. Seemingly they were talking about chopping an Asian channel as well? There's been a lot of anti-BBC fervour about, it has to be said.
