Ah that's cool! It's worth a watch - you even see GA giggle - kind of. I found it by chance just 5 minutes before it started, otherwise I would have posted in advance to let everyone know. Only a few days left My flatmate is mocking me for how little it has made so far

Here's a nice headline: uk.news.yahoo.com/itn/20080728/ten-x-files-debut-disaster-ea4616c.html The new X-Files film has debuted disastrously in the US, taking just £2 million on it's first night.
The cult TV series The X-Files was screened in the 1990s.
But the new Batman film in it's opening weekend stormed the box office, taking £79.2 million, beating the previous best of £75.6 million set by Spider-Man 3 in May 2007.
The Dark Knight was expected to make another £36 million at the weekend in the US alone, meaning it is on track to beat the record set by Pirates of the Caribbean 2 which took £150 million. The review is on the front page of Empire's site, at least it might catch someone's attention. Meanwhile, here's a Scully truck: ;D ;D This is a photo of Gillian checking out a Phile's tatoo. i49.photobucket.com/albums/f295/phatnat384/x-files%20premiere/TheX-FilesPremiereinHollywood100.jpg

I think it can be blamed on The Dark Night, and the fact that we're in a recession. If you weren't a die hard x-files fan and had $20 to go and see a film, having been told by every review how totally amazing the dark night is - which would you choose?

Haha very cool!! Meh, I've read more spoiler free Phile reviews and most seem pretty positive. I hear a lot of talk about it not being what the mainstream film audience wants to see - not enough explosions, not fast enough etc. I kinda agree as XF is a character driven, psychological drama - everyone is hyped up to the eyes with testosterzone from action because of Hancock and The Dark Knight. I still can't wait anyway. Apparently there is some footage after the end credits so stay until the end.....no leaving the seat when the credits start now! (I actually spoiled myself and watched a low quality clip of it on youtube - ugh!).

It just won't be the same now ;D Oh I don't know - I thought it was going to be some sort of humourus hoax. Anyway, it has nothing to do with the plot of the film or anything so it didn't spoil it at all for me thankfully. I couldn't really make the crappy quality out anyhow.

I think the blame for poor marketing has to be laid at Fox's door. Going up against The Dark Knight was not far off putting a nail in the coffin.
In my view we should have at least had the following:
- the official site should have been up before or as soon as shooting began - the 10 second clips of M & S in character were great and should have been online months before the release - there should have been a 30 or 60 second teaser early on - then trailer 1 - trailer 2 or a final trailer with them all being released properly and in good time to get the word out.
Secrecy about the plot is fine, good but as I've said before it does piss off the media.
On a more positive note, apparently the DVD will include commentary and also details of how misinformation was put out there. Remember that show of CC and the monster? Confirmed as fake on FS's blog.

What makes me confused is that The X-Files two was a movie that NEEDED heavy promotion. The Dark Knight would be very sucsessful (maybe not as record breaking - who knows?) even without the advertising campaign. The Film has been so hyped up even before it was official - the casting et all and the fact that it is Batman and a sequel sells it by itself. TDK had a very cool and unique promotion but it wasn't completely needed. TXF2 on the other hand - did need it. The majority of the mainstream audience have short term memories, they need to be reminded that not only did The X-Files exist as a TV show but it was a very popular and ground breaking show too. A lot of people could care less and will see it as either a poor remake (ala other TV to movies such as Dukes of Hazard and Miami Vice) or as just another psychological/horror film - it was neither. But a lot of people won't see that. It badly needed a promotion to get the buzz going - it had the potential to have an awesome PR campaign - the ideas of secrecy and what not could have been used so well. Even TDK get a lot a secret - their viral sights toyed with many ideas but rarely hinted to the story of the film - it was brilliant and had people demanding to know more. I said here when the film was announced that I was worried about the short length of time between initial shooting and release - a very short period for a film of this calibre. But meh - maybe they wanted to keep it with a cult status?

lol
I would agree with you and yes, we did flag concerns about the quick turnaround which may turn out to be true in terms of a lesser quality storm and film. I can't help but wonder if the writers' strike played a role here, weren't the TPTB sort of half boasting that they'd gotten the script sorted out prior to the strike kicking off? I mean, maybe they put themselves under unnecessary pressure to finish it and crammed.
We know they Fox said that it's pretty much now or never but I think they could have given themselves a little more time, and who knows held off until Xmas 2008 or summer 2009 for a release date. At least that way they might have been able to sharpen the storyline. I was never expecting a masterpiece but they could have ensured that all the necessary elements worked. Of course I'm pre-judging certain aspects because of reviews I've read.
TDK was always going to be a shoe-in after the success of Begins and its viral marketing campaign team did a damn good job of keeping people interested.
